Gone Fishin’….

“Thank you for being so transparent,” she said. I responded with “that’s just how we are around here.”

That was part of a conversation I had with a customer recently during her first visit to our coffee shop. As you read that it may seem like a really weird way to run a business or at the very least non-conventional when it comes to business “logic”. Just as I was encouraged when she said that in our conversation, we would be encouraged if you said that isn’t typical now. We don’t want to be typical.

We yearn for a time gone by when folks just dropped in and would sit-a-spell and catch up on the latest news around town… When a short break in your day would come and you knew there would be someone at the “spot” you’d know and you would go just to talk and visit…when you’d need a break and you’d simply hang a sing on the door that says “Gone Fishin’…”. Well, that’s what we’re doing. When we close on Saturday night of this week, we’ll be hanging out a sign that says “Gone fishin’… be back next week!” There are several reasons why we’ll be doing this.

First, we have said from the beginning that we are a family first and we are a business second. In the past FIVE months since we’ve opened, we haven’t changed our minds on that. We still believe in the value of our family (and yours) and we will continue to invest in that belief in spite of the cost of closing our doors for a week. We know this isn’t typical for any business to do this – especially one that is finishing up on the first six months in business. However, we see it differently. We think it makes perfect sense! Anything worth having will cost something. We believe we are investing in one of the most important things, our family. We also think that we’ve been rambling down this exciting journey now for over five months and we want to do a ‘check’ to make sure all is well with our family. School is done and to celebrate we’re going “fishin’…” for a few days. We’re going to be here and there so don’t worry about us, we’ll be back on June 3rd.

As a second point, we’ve been a part of an ongoing study for the past five months that has been about rest and how we were created for rest but yet we don’t rest. There’s no margin in our lives for rest. If you look at the society we live in, there is no time allowed for rest. We have created a world where we are expected to respond to a text no matter the time, answer emails no matter where we are, microwave our food because we don’t have time for water to boil, put on our makeup while we drive (I don’t do that by the way and neither does Alicia), race from work to the ball field and music practice and grab a burger on the way all in an effort to create a better life for us and the kids … but does it? No, it doesn’t. We know that if we are to truly get the rest we were created to experience, we have to create that margin in our lives. This week we are leaving the shop to create our margin. It is our rest. Yes it is physical rest but it is also mental, emotional and spiritual rest. You should find some time to rest too. Find a rest stop for your family.

Thirdly, we’ve got a lot of thinking to do. (Odd I should say it is mental rest and then say we’ve got thinking to do, right?) If you could but put a microphone in our minds, it would be nothing but a barrage of concepts and ideas that never seem to end. Honestly, we’ve got so many ideas we want to consider for Queen Bee Coffee Company and the McDonough community that we have to try to get some of them sorted out and on paper. We have ideas that we think will bring our community together in ways not seen in a while. We believe we can bring generations together so we can share life and wisdom together. We believe we can provide ways for families to come together like we haven’t done in a long time. We believe we can do more than bring great coffee to McDonough. We believe we can bring (and help create) great families to McDonough. Families come to a city because they like the places, the conveniences and opportunities they find there. Families stay in a city because they love what it does for their lives. They stay because they are having a great time in that city. They stay because it enriches their lives and in turn they enrich the community they live in. We believe we can be a small part of making McDonough the place where people don’t want to leave because they love living here.

So in short, we are taking a break before we embark on our second half of our first year. We will close on Saturday night and be closed Memorial Day Week. We will re-open on June 3rd. We are sorry if this is inconvenient for you and we hope you’ll understand.

King of Pops @ Queen Bee

The story goes like this… We had been planning to bring King of Pops (KOP) into the store for a while but just hadn’t done it with how crazy things have been since we opened. (Has it only been four months? Has in already been four months? We’ve almost gotten to the point where we don’t nearly die each week from the craziness of it all.)

Anyway, it happened… QUICK! We had been emailing KOP and last Thursday morning they said, “how about today?” We were ready but hadn’t really thought out the announcement yet so on our Facebook page we simply asked McDonough what they’d like us to add to the coffee shop “from the city”?  Hoping to just to get some discussion started. We got lots of responses like Whole Foods, Tin Lizzy’s, Trader Joes, etc. We tried to explain we couldn’t put a Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s inside our shop but the dam was broken. So many wanted so many things! It was so fun to watch! Interestingly enough over half of them said KOP?!?!? Little did anyone know that it was already on the way. Well, that afternoon they brought the freezer and our initial order. We made the announcement Thursday morning and we have been selling KOP like crazy since then. In just over 50 hours, we sold out of three flavors. That was WAY more than we ever anticipated! We had to go pick up more KOP from Atlanta on Saturday morning. Thank you to all our customers! We are very excited to be able to bring something to McDonough that you really really wanted! Another day and another fun thing about opening the shop in downtown McDonough!

If we had known bringing KOP to Queen Bee Coffee Company would bring joy to so many faces, we would have done it long ago. It is so great to see kids of all ages enjoying the pops inside and outside around the tables just laughing and enjoying life together. Slow down and enjoy life for a few moments today… if it’s with a cup of coffee or a King of Pop, we’ll be waiting!

Family 1st Friday

What’s the scoop on this Family 1st Friday thing??? (Disclaimer: We really like simple so don’t expect anything too complicated, ok?)

It’s really pretty simple – Family 1st Friday…. Put Family 1st on the 1st Friday of every month. What exactly does that mean? Here is our description of what Family 1st Friday is for us…

We have shared with folks from the beginning that we are a family oriented business – meaning family first and a business second. We know that doesn’t necessarily mesh perfectly with how the business world is commonly viewed. However, let us remind you that sometimes the views of the world around us might not always be right. They might be commonplace but that doesn’t necessarily make them right. In an effort to demonstrate how strongly we feel on this matter, we developed Family 1st Friday.

Family 1st Friday is our attempt to make a statement to our immediate family and the community that our family is first always. Let’s start with the first part – “family 1st”. Even though we’ve started a business, we have to make sure not to lose sight of the most important things like family. It doesn’t matter how successful our business is if our family suffers. Therefore we started with the name of “Family 1st”.

Now for the second part, “1st Friday”. We mark the first Friday of each month as a way to designate that we are keeping a regular commitment to support a belief that we hold tightly. Let’s back up a bit. We have choices to make in order to make this happen. We can either say we believe family comes first and hope that we remember to schedule it and show it to our kids or we can make a direct stand on the statement. We think it’s best to make deliberate and clear steps to make sure it happens. If we don’t schedule it, it often doesn’t happen. We’ve asked ourselves and been asked by others, “what about the business you lose on that Friday?” or “what about the folks who show up and don’t know about it?” We strongly believe that if something is important it will cost something in some form or fashion. Clearly, a Friday night can be financially advantageous but we are willing to make that sacrifice in an effort to put “Family 1st”. What about the customers who show up and see the sign that says “we’re sorry, we are closed for Family 1st Friday”? Well, we hope it strikes a chord with them and makes them wonder if they are taking measures to make sure their family is important in their lives and we hope they will come back on Saturday to ask us about it.

The time we have is fleeting and if we don’t all take clear and deliberate steps to grab on to as much of it as possible in the crazy world in which we live, the time will surely slip us by.

We encourage each and every one of you to celebrate Family 1st Friday with us! Go and do something special with your family and then come share with us what it was. We will have the butcher paper on the wall ready for the stories. Does it have to be exotic and exciting every time? No. Does it have to be expensive? No. Does it have to involve lots of planning? Not necessarily. Can it involve these things? Sure it could but it doesn’t have to. Just make some plans and your family will thank you and so will the generations that follow.

What you do today affects what your children do tomorrow.

52 Weeks Ago….

#tbt Throwback Thursday – a look back in time…. if you had told us 52 weeks from when this picture was taken, we would be holding a Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting at our own shop, we would have told you “you’re crazy!” Thankfully, doors have been opened and we have been blessed beyond measure and that is where we find ourselves – at 58 Griffin Street (next to Blumen Trio).

We began selling publicly in the Summer of 2012 in the parking lot next to Courthouse Square Market with a handful of other vendors. One year ago this weekend, the market moved inside the Chafin Building and we took this picture (before we “decked out” our space). Tomorrow at 10am, we hold an official ribbon cutting at 58 Griffin Street thanks to Main Street McDonough Program Program! Come celebrate the new chapter in our business with us!

Thanks to all of our customers who have been a part of this journey so far and we look forward to the days to come and what doors will open that we didn’t even know were there….sort of like this one….. We get nervously excited just wondering what’s next because it may not look like we think it will but we know it will be great!

It’s so crazy!

I have wanted to sit and tell you about all the incredible things going on in our lives right now with this business. (I’d tell you about all the stuff not about this business if you’d like but that might be too much too soon!) We have so many people come up and offer their hands in support that it has become almost impossible to wrap our minds around it all. Just last night, or rather, yesterday afternoon, we had an “open house” for some family and friends who have helped out with various stages of this venture so far. It was simply our way to say, “Let us serve these special people first before anyone else.” We tried to thank everyone but pretty much just stood there and mumbled and cried for a few minutes and some discernable words were understood but not much else. Honestly, it was mostly understandable but there was a lot of crying going on. We have been so blessed by so many people so far! It has been amazing to see people come into our lives that we never knew before and offer to help in ways that were SO needed. Thank you all!

Today is surreal. It is the day before we open something we have dreamed about for years. We should be scared to death – at least I think we should be – but we aren’t. We should be as nervous as a long-tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs – but we aren’t. It is so crazy! We had an owner of a very successful Henry County business tell us last weekend, “You don’t look nervous or tired enough to be about to open a business.” (or something loosely interpreted like that) Trust us, we ARE tired but we are super excited about what this business can mean for so many people. Thank you for making this a reality. We are so very thankful we get to do this.

So I am posting and Alicia is working on getting ready for tomorrow….. when she finds out, I’ll be in trouble.  Don’t tell her, please. 🙂
